Clinical trials have been undertaken into the effectiveness of the Thermofoucs Thermometer.
A comparative study in Italy was conducted by Dr C. E. OSIO, V. CARNELLI. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of measuring body temperature with an infrared non contact thermometer versus conventional devices in infants and children. A total of 90 pediatric patients, comprising inpatients and ambulatory patients, examined at the Second Childrens Clinic of the University of Milan were recruited and divided by age into 3 groups (<1 year, 1-5 years, >5 years of age). The body temperature of each patient was measured using the study device at three sites (forehead, navel, axilla) and three other commercially available thermometers. Correlation between the measurements was tested with linear regression analysis.
A study in Japan was conducted into the usefulness of an Infrared Thermofocus Thermometer, for Intraoperative Core Temperature Monitoring. Fifteen adult patients who required non-abdominal surgery under general anesthesia were enrolled in this study. After induction of general anesthesia, thermistor probes were inserted into the rectum (approx. 8 cm) and esophagus (approx. 30 cm) for measurements of rectal and esophageal temperatures, respectively. The infrared forehead skin temperature was simultaneously measured with other kinds of temperature monitor. Regression analysis and Bland-Altman analysis were used to compare the data with esophageal temperature as a core temperature.
What the professionals say:
The use of Thermofocus for body temperature measurement, as evaluated by us, has been certainly positive under many points of view. First of all, the reliability and accuracy of the obtained values that, taking as reference the axillary temperature, in every groups of patients is at least as accurate as the other infrared thermometers used in the study. But also, as previously said, the ease of use and convenience of the instrument which immediately 'conquered' a stable place in the white coat of the doctor.
"I am a GP and have been using the Thermofocus for two years. I feel that it has many advantages over conventional thermometers for me the primary ones being its simplicity and non contract operations."
